Crotalus: keeping environmental projects under control with GanttPRO

“GanttPRO became an alternative to Microsoft Project we were looking for, with the right balance between price and functionality and key features like Critical Path, Kanban, and Baseline.”

A story about a consultancy company’s approach to handling complex client-driven environmental projects.

Company overview

Company: Crotalus

Roles interviewed: Reynaldo Hernandez, founder and Landfill Gas Specialist

Project types: environmental consulting, greenhouse gas emissions mitigation projects, with construction and engineering involved

External pressures: need to manage workflows that vary in complexity while balancing functionality and cost

Tool history: Microsoft Project

Problems hinted at: pricing limitations of Microsoft Project

Summary

  • Besides the default Gantt chart view, the team regularly uses the Board view to visualize all the tasks in one place and estimate the capacity.
  • Baseline helps compare the current project state with the original plan and identify delays before they become an issue.
  • Critical Path provides better control over engineering and construction-focused initiatives by highlighting the tasks that directly have an impact on the entire timeline.
  • Company Background

What does your company focus on?

Crotalus is a consultancy company dedicated to greenhouse gas emissions mitigation projects, specializing in biogas initiatives, waste separation and generation of carbon credits under international standards. The team mainly focuses on consulting, along with project management support in some cases. Their scope ranges from supporting clients throughout the entire lifecycle to managing actual construction. Since these workflows vary in length, focus, and complexity, the tool of choice had to be flexible for daily planning and affordable in price.

Reynaldo Hernandez, founder of Crotalus, shares why the team chose GanttPRO and how it supports their current approach.

Back in the day, we used to work in Microsoft Project, and it was definitely doing its job for us. But the missing part was affordability. GanttPRO was the alternative we were looking for, with the right balance between price and functionality

    Struggle

How did your approach look before GanttPRO?

Before GanttPRO, the team was already familiar with structured project management through Microsoft Project. However, the pricing became the main reason to start looking for a new platform. “Back in the day, we used to work in Microsoft Project, and it was definitely doing its job for us. But the missing part was affordability. GanttPRO was the alternative we were looking for, with the right balance between price and functionality and key features like Critical Path, Kanban, and Baseline.”

    Solution

    • “Besides the Gantt chart view, we also use the Kanban view regularly. We didn’t notice it at first, but discovering it was definitely worth it, as it turned out to be more useful than I expected. It’s the best way to quickly evaluate the to-do list without extra work and visualize task distribution.”

    • For the team, Baseline serves as a control point for comparing current project performance against the original plan and tracking any deviations along the way. “It is essential to track delays and prevent the whole process from collapsing, that’s the way to put it.”

    • Critical Path became another particularly valuable GanttPRO feature: “This functionality was very important for us, and it was something we also used in Microsoft Project. It helps a lot when the timeline depends on engineering and construction-related tasks.”

    Impact

What does your work look like now with GanttPRO?

The value of GanttPRO was not only in replacing Microsoft Project with a more cost-effective alternative but also in keeping essential planning features like Kanban, Baseline, and Critical Path in one place. For over two years, this combination has helped the team monitor deviations from the original plan, anticipate delays, and maintain control over project timelines.
